I have a question, it probably won't be an easy one to answer but hopefully we can get several posts and get some kind of picture out of it. I am curious as to just how important third party modules, training, websites, etc. is to the community.

In your opinion, what pertcentage of the total DNN experience relates to third party modules, third party training, third party websites, etc.

VS.

What percentage of your total DNN experience relates to the framework itself, core modules, DNN website, etc?????????

There will probably be several questions regarding the term "total experience". By this I mean time spent building site (s), time spent learning different parts, time spent reading/interacting on websites, modules used in sites, etc. For this comparison time spent developing custom modules, tweaking the source code or other custom activities should be considered third party.

Just to get things started I would say 60% to 70% of my personal DNN experience relates to third party modules, websites, training, skins, building custom modules, etc. If I have erred on this number it would probably be low - the number could actually be higher.

Maybe the core team already has some insights with regards to this - if so please share.

Thanks

Greg

Personaly I have installed ran, managed, supported, etc. close to 25+ different DNN sites.  Some still up others have gone by the wayside for various reasons i.e clients go out of business, sold their business etc.  I can only relate my experiences.  Of those 25+ sites I thik 50% utilized paid (commercial) modules.  The other 50% were straight DNN, DNN project and free modules.  Approximately 30% required custom modules that I developed.

I would think that I am not to much different than the community as a whole.  Although I havent personaly used any formalized trainning, other than some of the great tutorials that are available, I can see a need and value for trainning materials.  It would have been nice for example to have an admistrators trainning package to give to some clients.

hope this helps and invites more discussion on this topic.

From my perspective the community and third party plays a pretty big role.

I have setup sites that run the DNN installation only, but those are very simple sites that needed user editable content.

I have been making a pretty decent amount of business myself building modules so I see that there is a very big need for custom modules to the system.  I also know that from the number of readers on my website that the third party training, tutorials, and documentation are much needed

So I really guess it depends on what you are looking for.
