This might seem a bit rude but you do really need to have an understanding of how to accomplish relatively simple tasks such as displaying images in forum posts if you are going to be succeed in installing and configuring DNN.

Is there someone you could ask to help who is familiar with IIS and web apps?

To answer some of your points:

You most definitely do need to make sure the web server is running. You ask if "“Default web site (stopped), is this a problem ? " --- Yes it is. Start IIS.

You do not need to edit web.config if you are using the default install options for the database running the system in the dev environment locally.

You will need to ensure the aspnet user has the correct permissions for the folder where DNN is installed.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Tim

Hi tim, you dont seem rude at all, thank you for your time and help.I do have a basic understanding of web and computer, for instance i can edit images in fireworks, build web sites in dreamweaver upload sites, css, the last web site i built, severeal search words get it listed in first position in google. (cant do that with my own web site though damm)

when i am trying to install a picture form the tool bar above, it is taking me to a browser server not to my desk top where the pictures are for uploading.

I am trying to get IiS running, every time i click in control panel - admin tool - iis - then in the web site drop down it says that web site stopped , when i right click it and press start i get the message "unexpeted error 0x8ffe2740 occcured"

i am trying to put my finger on what is wrong with my set up.

The computer was reformated and windows reinstalled before i set out trying to get this working.

Again Tim, thank you for your time, i did not take it as rude, i am greatful for any advice or help at his time

you are not allowed to upload image here. You need to put the images on one of your own websites, and link to them (just put the url of the image in the url field you see when adding a new image)

Anyhow: the order of installation is important.  If you installed .NET 1.1. and .NET 2.0 prior to installing IIS, it will not work. You will need to manually reinstall the frameworks to enable them for IIS (i know.. tell it to MS ;) ) See this MS KB article for info on how to do that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306005

Also: review your Event log to find out what the exect error was (look at the application log and the system log).

Also, by default, windows xp has "simple file sharing" enabled. This is cool for the avarage home user, but if you are getting involved in serious business.. there is nothing simple about it. It will not allow you to set access rights to folders, which is essential to getting any web application to run (not only DNN). In order to turn it off, just open an windows explorer window, go to Tools > Folder Options, select the "View" Tab, uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing" and click ok (i will edit my first post to include this step)

Yesterday evening i managed to install dont net nuke on to my machine with a very easy set of instructions, without using IIS. To be honest i couldnt believe it was so easy, i read through many many links on this site and finally found this one

http://dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNuke/tabid/195/Default.aspx

In fact i managed to install it twice.

I would like to take the time to thank evey one here for giving advice and trying to help get me started. I am greatful for the time you had taken on my behalf.

I would recomend that the instrucions set out in the link above be posted some where on this site, this really is set up for the beginner.

Again thank you to you all.
