I have a dnn installation on one host and I am trying to move it to another.

Here is what I have done:

I zipped up all files of the installation (I installed in a folder named "Portal")

I made a backup copy of the SQL server database

On the host, we created a folder named "Portal" and unzipped all files into it.

Restored the SQL server database into a database named the same on new hosts server.

Changed web.config to reflect new server

Host has created the virtual directory on the "Portal" directory and assigned permissions on this directory as per the installation instructions

when I browse to the portal directory, I get the following:

 Server Error in '/' Application.

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

The web.config file in the Portal directory has customerror mode = off just as specified but, I still get this error. Did I forget something? Thanks for any insight, input, etc. Brian

Try modifiying the web.config as metnioned to turn off the custom errors.  However, most likely the issue is related to an incorrect version of ASP.NET and the changes will not make a difference.

Ensure that you are running the proper ASP.NET version for the virtual directory (1.1 for 3.x or earlier, 2.0 for 4.x and later)

Thanks Mitchel,

I do have the web.config set with custom errors off.

I actually used the guide on your site to do this move. Very easy to follow.

In the root directory, I have my "Portal" folder and an "ASPNet_Client" folder. Inside that folder, I have a 2_0_50727 folder.

I have not been doing this part of the install, my host has. It looks as if the correct asp version is out there. It appears as though when I browse to the site, it is not seeing my web.config file

If you are not seeing the detailed error message even with customErrors set to off, they have the default version incorrect on your virtual directory.  You might have to submit a support ticket to them to change it to 2.0

Does the host you moved to provide DotNetNuke installations or support?

Not to turn this thread into a commercial, but I know when I moved from WebHost4Life to PowerDNN, that the PowerDNN staff handled the move for me.  That is my definition of great customer service.  Sometimes you just need to find a good Hosting provider.
