Is there a way to allow a new user to choose whether or not to receive the newsletter at the time they register?

I thought of adding some text to the verification email telling the user how to opt out but that certainly seems to be a very cunbersome way to do it.

Thanks for any help you can give.

this option would require a core code change. to modify email text use the language editor from admin  :: languages menu item

Sebastian:

Altering the core code seems to be the better way of doing things from the point of view of a new user. All it would need would be acheckbox and hopefully just a few lines of code. I opened DNN in Visual Studio 5 and did a lot of looking around but couldn't find the file I would need to alter. I am familar with Visual Basic and will be working with my localhost so if I really mess up, I won't affect my working live site.

Thank for any help you can give.

You'll quickly learn that modifying the core code is not the optimal way to do things, not if you ever want to do any upgrades. I used to mod core code as well, but it's way too much work to maintain your changes when upgrades come, all imho

Chris:

Thanks for your input. I decided a while back that altering the core code was not a good idea since I have encountered similar problems before while maintaining program code. I thought I might make an exception in this one case because I'm thinking that the modification shouldn't be all that involved. If I use heavy commenting and keep a backup it shouldn't be too difficult to maintain upgrades. To me, it doesn't seem like a very good idea to have to include in the registration email instructions for subscribing or unsubscribing to a newsletter. If the new user is subscribed automatically, people who don't want the news letter may resent having to go through the extra steps of cancelling and if they aren't subscribed automatically, some people will just not bother with the extra steps needed to subscribe.

Actually, I have already been forced to alter the core code because the registration module says "All fields marked with an red arrow are required." My site is aimed at teachers and I am sure I would receive a lot of flack about that :"an".
