I am trying to upgrade an old website.  I have both sql2000 and sql2005 express version.  This is on an XP box.

I downloaded it to my local machine and got it running perfectly.  Now I am trying to upgrade it to the newest version.  I have changed my config file including the sql2000 settings and the 2 machine keys.

I go through the installation and I end up with this error

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:\webs\cchiv33\App_Data\Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

There is no Database.mdf in the directory shown above.  Should there be ?  Shouldn't an upgrade from 2000 to 2000 be easier then this ?

Did I do anything wrong here:

Select Database:

Server: Enter the Name or IP Address of the computer where the Database is located. (if using Oracle enter the Data Source (SID))
Database: Enter the Database name
Integrated Security: Check this if you are using SQL Server's Integrated Security, which means you will be using your Windows account to access SQL Server. If you are using SQL Server Express then you will most likely need to check this option. If you have been given a UserId/Password to access your Database, leave this unchecked, and provide the UserId/Password combination.
User ID: Enter the UserID for the Database
Password: Enter the Password for the Database
Run as db Owner: Check this if you are running the database as Database Owner - if left unchecked you will be running as the User ID specified
Object Qualifier: Enter an optional "prefix" to use for all your database objects - this helps ensure that there are no object name clashes.

OK.  I commented out the sql2k5 express stuff in the config file.

I am now getting this error:

Installing Database - Version 4.4.0...Upgrading Database to Version ERROR: See C:\webs\cchiv33\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\04.04.00.log for more information...FAILURE 400 - Conversion from string "ERROR: See C:webscchiv33Provider" to type 'Integer' is not valid.

After trying to find the answer to this on these forums I can tell you for sure, there is NO log.  None.  I have tried the installation as sql user and the sql dbo with no luck.  There seem to be several people that are having this problem but no one with solutions.

Anyone ?

Maybe try setting up your new web.config manually and using the "AUTO" function of the installer. It seems to work a lot better for me.

Good luck,

Mike,

I was going to attempt to try your way of installing the upgrade.  I restored my old 3.x database but left all the files in the dnn directory the same except for the web.config file.  I deleted the current web.config and brought over the renamed the release.config to web.config and manually filled in my sql server 2k credentials (commented out the sql express 2k5 statements) and copied the machine keys.  I then browsed to it and the installation ran, asking me no questions.  When it finished it was up and working fine.

I am not sure why this worked, over the upgrade dialogue boxes so I can only guess.  The only thing I did different is to comment out both sql2k5 express settings and THEN browse to the site for the upgrade

Comment this out:

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> -->

Uncomment and fill in:

"Server=(local);Database=databasename;uid=databaseuser;pwd=;"

Obviously you would do the opposite if you are using sql2k5 express edition.  I really hope this helps others with this proble.  Please post if it does.  I am going to post this answer to the other threads on the same topic

Actually this is the way I do all of my installations - whether running a SQL Express database or not I use the SQL2000/2005 connection string. Instead of commenting out I just delete the Express string altogether. Bypassing the Install Wizard seems to solve any installation errors that I have had.

Glad things worked out for you - spread the wealth of knowledge learned.

Mike
