Hi,

can someone point me to in the right direction to upgrade from 3.3.4 to 4.5.3?  I tried downloading the 4.5.3 upgrade and installing it,  following the web.config directions...changing the keys/SQL info etc. but after loosing about 2 days recovering back to 3.3.4 because of the multi[ple errors trying this direct upgrade approach, I don't want to waste any more time.  I would like to upgrade to the latest version of dnn but I would like to understand if I need to upgradefrom 3.3.4 to a specific version prior to going to 4.5.3.  Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith

Keith,

I just completed this upgrade and the direct apoproach went smoothly. One thing to consider is that Version 3.3.4 runs on ASP.NET 1.1 while Vertsion 4.5.3 uses ASP.NET 2.0. The only other thing I did was to change the connection string (in 2 places) and the machine and decryption keys in the new web.config file.

If you decide to try again - let me know how it goes.

Good luck,

Mike

Hi Mike,

  thanks for the reply.

I did upgrade the framework prior to trying to upgrade the 4.5.3.  My host settings have the framework @ version 2.0.50727.42.  I also changed the connection string in 2 places and also changed the machine keys but I encountered errors that I couldn't fix.  I am fully restored back to 3.3.4 now, thanks to taking everyones advice about backing up prior to upgrading.  I want to try again and I'm hopeful that the second time will be a better experience.

So you went directly to 4.5.3 from 3.3.4, you didn't go to an interim version first?

Thanks,

Keith

No I upgraded directly from 3.3.4 to 4.5.3. I am curious as to what some of the errors you received on your initial upgrade were which may point to something you may have missed.

One thing you can try to prevent messing around with your online site too much is to copy your installation to your local computer with a database copy. Once you get that working you can attempt the upgrade on the copy to see how things will work once you upgrade for real. If that's too much trouble you can try installing a fresh 3.3.4 version on your local computer and try upgrading that installation. It should give you a lot more confidence and less apprehension once you take the plunge with your online site.

Good luck on your second attempt,

Mike
