I have my own web server (Windows 2003 with SQL 2005).  I have full access to it onsite.

I want to do the following.

  1. Host regular websites ( I have a couple non DNN sites)
  2. Host Multiple DNN sites (Portals) as well at the master DNN admin site.

I have installed 4.5.3 successful to the http://localhost/dotnetnuke to a virtual directory under the default website on IIS.

Basically the long term goal is to start a webhosting biz that focuses on DNN templated websites for organizations..

How do I make this happen?
What dns settings do I need.
What http headers do I need to use on iis.

Do I have to assign an ip to the DNN website instead of using (all unassigned)

Basicaly you can use only 1 IP adress for all your sites DNN and non DNN sites.

You must setup your DNS servers to point to that IP adress

On IIS you can leave (all unassigned), and use the "http headers" to redirect some domain names to non DNN sites and others to a DDN installations that contains portals with this aliases.

Hope that help you...

I have re-read the install guide and did not find answers to my qustions.

I have sucessfully installed 4.5.3.

I now i have another issue.  I can not log on.  I logged on as the host account and now, when i hit login, nothing happens.  I am using http://localhost/dotnetnuke and get to my portal.

I can not access this from any of my other computers.  i have tried the IP address (http://192.168.0.x/dotnetnuke).  i also have tried by host name (I have my internal dns pointing to the IP).

Sir,

Firstly I'll say you are reaching out to a community of people here that are always willing to help. I give everyone here that takes the time to help others major Kudos!

To be frank about your quest, what you are asking are basic concepts one would need a firm grasp on in order to facilitate your venture of hosting template based websites via DNN. If you must ask how these things work then chances are your not ready to admin a hosting environment. I am not trying to insult you but rather save you from hours of frustration and possibly discruntled customers. After 7 years of developing Coldfusion applications for the web I thought I might jump into asp.net and in that I would utilize DNN to jump start this venture. I figured it would save me so much time because the framework already does so much even with out the modules.

Based on your questions one might gather that you too are new to DNN so I just wanted to share with you that it has been one of the most frustrating frameworks I have ever delt with. I won't go into details but what you might consider is finding a good DNN hosting company and let them help make your venture a bit less painful. It seems the people that have quite a bit of experience with DNN do well with it. I would rather build sites from scratch or from a home grown framework, atleast I know how it works and what to do when it's broke. I have already wasted more time that I care to admit trying to build 2 sites with DNN.
