Hello,

I have a portal created with a custom skin.  This means the skins and containers directories found in these portals exist.  I have created a template based on this portal with the custom skin.  When I create a new portal and select the template created from this custom one it creates all the content correctly, but does not get the skins and containers directories so the newly created website does not look right.  I can then go and copy the containers and skins directories from the original website and paste them in and everything is fine, but I need this to be an automated process, and I feel the template probably should do this, but I dont know how to configure them to do so.

Please let me know what I am doing wrong.  I simply want to create some child portals that look exactly like the template from this one with the custom skins, and I want it to be automated.  Aren't templates supposed to pickup the custom skins as well?

Thanks
James

before setting up the new installation you need to copy the skin and cointainer into the proper subfolders of /installation, so it gets installed automatically on DNN installation. Modules, Skins, Language Packs need to be properly installed before creating a portal applying a template using them.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but I am a little confused.  When we created the portal it put a directory in the /portals directory called /1 and in the /portals/1/ directory we created the /skins and /containers directories that store the custom information, and applied them to the portal, and it worked great.  Now when we make a template of this portal and then use the template when creating a new portal it does not get the custom skins directories (/skins and /containers).  Now you have said they must be properly installed in the /installation directory.

I have looked on the server and found a directory in the root called /install which does have /containers and /skins and /languages so I am thinking this is what you are talking about.  In these directories reside empty .txt files in each one.  Are we supposed to insert some sort of reference in those .txt files?  What is it we are supposed to do that we haven't already to make this properly installed so that it will work with the templates?  We dont want every portal created in dnn to have this template with the custom skins, but we want every portal that designates this template to have the custom skins.  Please do advise to help me with my confusion.

Thanks
James

/install folder (in the root) is used to place all elements to be installed during installation of DotNetNuke. Skins and containers placed inside get installed into /portals/_default/skins/SkinName and /portals/_default/containers/ContainerName folders, i.e. available for all portals of your installation, AFAIK there is no option to install portal specific skins non-interactively.
