After reading the SEO for DNN Primer (http://seablick.com/blog/tabid/53/articletype/articleview/articleid/66/dnn-seo-quickstart-guide.aspx), I am curious about something... If I have a site with a very decent ranking w/o the FriendlyNames URL Rewriter, if I implement it now will this effect my ratings since the cached and indexed URLs will be changing?

SB

Edit: let me rephrase, this isn't just with Ventrian FriendlyNames, but any rewriting of the URLs being with the built-in DNN provider, Ventrian or Inventua's or any for that matter... basically, does changing the URLs on a live site negatively affect it's rankings and should I avoid it or at the very least, approach it with caution?

Yes, if you change the url of a page that is already known and ranked it will negatively affect your rankngs.  One way to counter that affect is to create a 301 redirect from the old url to the new url which will tell the search engine that it has permanently moved so that it can apply the old ranking to the new page.  You will still se some lag as the indexes are rebuilt though.

Switching Friendly Url providers is not a great idea if you are already established. A better idea is to create new Urls that are more search engine optimized and maintain the old with links to the new.  More content is generally better, especially if it is somewhat different and if you can get other sites to link to it .

Thanks John,

That was what we were concerned about, however my thinking was flawed... I was thinking that if the bot crawled to mysite.com/Pagename/Tabid/##/default.aspx and the site spit back the new URL, the bot might be savvy enough to pickup on the change, however I can see what you're saying about the need for a 301 and to keep the old content live.

Thanks again!

SB
