I apologize if this subject has already been covered, the search system keeps throwing an error on me today for some reason.

How can I add or additional fields to the registration form to include things that will be used in verification of a user, such as companyname or account number?

Login as admin go to admin|users  then select the 'Manage Profile Properties' from the User Accounts action menu. You can add new items to the profile there.  This won't do any auto verification though.

Under the 'UserSettings' item you can also do some basic redirection.

I'm sorry, maybe I am not explaining myself properly. (Or maybe I'm not understanding what you're mentioning), let me try again

When a new person comes to the site and goes to "Register" they get a screen that requests username, first name, last name, display name, email address, and password.  What I want to do is add a few additional fields to this.  I've added a user property called account number, and made it required, but it does not appear on the registration form.

Is what I'm asking for possible?

It's not possible with the core code, without modifications. You can use a 3rd party registration module though if you wanted to achieve that.
