Hi there,

Hope I've posted this in the right forum.  I'm having trouble installing the latest version of DotNetNuke 4.0.2.

I am using Windows XP and SQL Express Edition on my local machine.  Build succeeds but then when the web page loads up in the browser it talks about not having the appropriate permissions on my DotNetNuke directory.  I originally tried to fix this as it suggested, disabling Simple File Sharing and then giving the ASPNET user full control of the directory.  That failed, but I read another post suggesting there was a problem with having the directory located within C:\Documents and Settings\etc, so I moved the files into a new directory (C:\DotNetNuke) and gave the ASPNET user the approriate permission in that directory.  Rebuilt the application, but same problem.  At various stages I tried removing and recreating the database to no avail.

After no luck there, I installed SQL Server 2005 EE on a separate machine, in the hope I'd have more luck with this.  When I change my web.config file to point to this, I get the error "Could not connect to database", and then some information about SQL Server may not be allowing remote connections and using a Named Pipe Provider.  I have since enabled both TCP/IP and Named Pipes on the database (via Surface Area Configuration), restarted the database and tried again only to get the same problem.  I've double and triple checked the connection string, and the user that I created and everything looks okay.

A little bit frustrated now, so any help to get DotNetNuke working would be most appreciated!  Either with SQL Server 2005 Express on my local machine or SQL Server 2005 EE on the other machine ... I'd just like to get to the next step.

Thanks for your patience.

Regards, Adam.

Hi adam,

I think this post would be more appropriate in "Install it!" forum.  What database is dnn trying to connect to when you get the 'could not connect to database' error?

Thanks for your reply.

I am trying to remotely connect to SQL Server 2005 EE.  It is installed on Windows 2003 EE on a VMWare virtual server running off my machine.  I am connecting via its IP address.

Hi there

Okay, I've sorted out the database issues.  I can now connect to either SQL 2K5 Enterprise or SQL 2K5 Express.  It's created one table (Version) and three stored procedures.

So now I still get the permissions error:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

It then tells me to add ASPNET user account to the root folder of the website (the directory is at the root level of C: drive).  I am on Windows XP.  I have gone into this directory, and added ASPNET given it full permission.  Actually, since that didn't work I have given everyone full permission to this directory also, but I still keep getting the same error shown above.

Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks again.
