Hello DNN World.  I'm quite new to DNN...someone set up our site and I'm just doing the content management.  I need help on a couple of things:

1. I want to create a skin for a module, but am absolutely clueless on what software to use.  I have Photoshop and GoLive (CS2)...I think I have VMWare or something like that...do I need something like Visual Basic?

2. How do I know what version on DNN our site runs on?

3. Is there a DNN software I'm suppose to use to design on my computer before uploading to our site?

4. I've been looking up a couple of tutorials about modules and stuff, and it keeps bringing up something about testing demos in http://localhost/.  Obviously, if I type that into the address line, I get an error.  What's this all about?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me with these issues. www.napsoc.org

Hi there,

  1. To create a skin, you can use Photoshop to design, and then any HTML editor to create the html. You should read the documentation of skinning for reference on the various tokens that you can use to insert into the html. Then simply upload the html (along with the XML and CSS) to allow the DNN skinning engine to generate the skin (and containers, if any).
  2. To check the DNN version, you can login as host and go into Host Settings.
  3. Not that I know of.
  4. If you are running Windows XP Professional, you can setup IIS and SQL Express, and then install DNN on your computer. Normally you would copy the files to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DNN and then access the site through http://localhost/DNN

Hope this helps, let me know if somehow you still get stuck.

Hey Ed!  Thanks for the reply. A few more questions pertaining to the ones I asked before, respectively:

1.  Is the DNN skinning engine within the site itself?

2. Thanks...we're running 4.0.2!

3. OK...

4. IIS and SQL Express...I'm pretty much clueless on what they are, and if they're already in XP or if its some separate software to purchase.  In regards to installing DNN on my computer, is that some software that I need to buy, or do I download that from our website's server (we have an external host)?

1. yes

4. Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.1 is part of Windows XP Professional, but not installed by default (Control Panel :: Software :: Add Components)
SQL Express (Advanced Edition with Management Studio) can be downloaded for free from Microsoft.com.

Thanks Ed and Leupold...you guys are great!  I did install the IIS and the SQL Express 2005. Don't know what to do with it yet...I did figure out I can download DNN for free from the site.

Hopefully this will be my last of questions (for now, anyway).  Two questions...which type of install do I use if I'm just trying to do some local edtting/testing before uploading/updating the actual site: Source Package, Starter Kit Package, or  Install Package? Like I mentioned before, I am a newbie, but anxious to get a pretty good working knowledge of DNN for the sake of our organization's website.

There's probably an obvious answer to this question, but if we're running 4.0.2 on our site, would I need to use the Upgrade Package to upgrade to 4.3.7, or the latest, 4.5.3? (4.0.2 isn't listed as a download option)

Also, if you have any suggestions about what I can do with our website layout (particularly the home page), please help www.napsoc.org.  I'd really appreciate it.  Thanks again,

Newbie
