I've read a number of post with people having problems with the http compressions settings; however, these posts were all from last year.  Therefore, I suspect the outstanding issues have all been addressed and we are good-to-go changing these settings?

I ran a test on that one compression test site oft posted in the forums and it asserted that I would gain 313% using compression.  Truth be told, I would be happy with 62%, so I am just wondering what's the best setting to achieve true http compression?

With regards to cacheability, would setting it to "heavy" have any negative impact on the site?

And, I read a long (slightly complicated) post elsewhere that talked about changing the web.config and tons of other changes needed to achieve compression; are all these changes built into the core, insofar that I could literally just flip the switch and set it to, say, deflate of Gzip and voila?

Any help would be appreciated.

There's no good reason to go with the core compression when you can get PageBlaster for free.

PageBlaster not only does compression, it also does caching to give you performance around 10 times better than running DNN without it.

You can find it here:  http://www.snapsis.com/OnlineStore/BrowseProducts/tabid/589/List/1/ProductID/9/Default.aspx

Thanks, John.  Just downloaded it and will check it out; does it install like a regular module, or is there something special I have to do...no web.config changes...all is automatic and of the 'plug-and-play' ilk?  :) I'll backup my files and db and get mentally prepared.

It's an Http Module, which does not install like a DNN module, and does require a web.config change.

It's really easy though, the steps are outlined in the package, or you can view them in my support forum:

Feel free to ask any questions there.

Once again, thanks, John! It was so easy even a caveman like me could do it.

Document Status: Compressed

Compressed File Size: 9,429
Is PipeBoost Customer: NO
File Is already being served by HTTP Compression Software. No analysis has been done.
Original File Size: 41,787
Original File Size Reduction: 77.48%

I still have a little delay once you click on another page, but once the page is being sent, you don't see each menu item and modules loading one by one like before...snappy once the page is actually being sent. I think finding a new host would serve me well, too. :)

I was just thinking - is there a 'best practice' on cleaning out the DB and ridding my directories of old modules installed and no longer used (or installed, didn't work the way I thought, so sitting there taking up space)? With the upcoming release almost upon us, I was thinking of doing a fresh install, then figuring out how to just add my current content and modules I am actually using...thought perhaps I would get performance gains here, too...much like a feeling of a fresh Windows install.  :)

PS...any known issues with the core blog and compression?  Perhaps it quit working between now and the last post a week ago, but when I go to add a new entry now, it just creates a totally blank page...but have had a lot of issues with it, so perhaps my problem lies elsewhere.
