I'm running a couple DNN sites with ASP.NET 1.1 and wanted to install DNN 4.x.x.  I set up a separate application pool and configured the site for ASP.NET 2.0.  But I'm getting an error dealing with a tag in the web.config file about permissions, and the error window that comes up says I'm still using ASP.NET 1.1.

So, I figured I'd go back to DNN 3.x, and I get this error: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Now, I created a virtual directory and the NetworkService "user" has full permissions.  What do I need to do to fix either of these problems?

While DNN is great, I get so frustrated every time I have to install it for a new site because I spend literally HOURS trying to figure out one stupid problem, and there is no place to find answers without perusing thousands of forum pages.

Any help would be appreciated.

Marc

make sure, the dotnetnuke installation with web.config resides in the root of your IIS web site or virtual directory.

Oh boy.  I got DNN 3.x running. This was my bad.  For some reason I didn't have IIS configured for www.[site].com, just [site].com.  Apologies folks!
