Hi,

I just did a quick test install of DNN 454 and noticed that the default HTML module is installed as a source version in App_Code instead of dll. Is there a reason for this?

Thanks,

rudgr

That is the way of the future for the core DNN modules.  It has been converted to an ASP.Net 2.0 project and they decided to use the dynamic compilation model (WSP).

ah ok, aren't there performance penalties associated with this approach as compared to the compiled one?

Would you mind explaining why this approach was chosen? Because it's more "easy" to change the code?

Thanks again,

rudgr

Yes, there are performance penalties as compared to the pre-compiled approach.

Sorry, I can't speak officially for the reasons why this approach was taken.
Michael Washington is a big advocate of doing it this way, maybe he can answer that question.

One advantage it gives to the DotNetNuke project is that you do not have to have the full blown version of Visual Studio to develop with it, so for the open source purists it gives them the ability to use free tools like Visual Studio express.

Before people get all crazy about that so called "performance penalty", isn't it a fact that the compilation only happens if the code actually changes?  And that only affects initial load time, not the actual module execution after wards.

Also, development in the new ASP.Net 2.0 way is much more simpler than the old way, which you can still do if you are a module developer.  This is a good thing for the community in general, mostly newcomers.  Experienced developers can choose if they want to develop using the new way (VS 2005 Web Site Projects, easier) or the old way (Web Application Projects, harder)
