sun.. i am not sure i follow your line of thinking.

As far as i can see there IS a valid way to get the modal extender to work and that is to switch to xhtml strict. There are more modules out there that require xhtml strict to function properly (google maps comes to mind).

Of course it would be possible to change the doctype from code (from within your module), but then you have to make sure that your clients know that and only use xhtml compliant skins

Thanks for you replay !yes, if I follow your advice, the modal extender works well and  the ajax function will be here!  However the skin ss style will be  not  work well, including the very module setting page and host setting etc. Just more one problem, why the view mode and edit mode (in the controlpanel) will be so much different? you mention that it would be possible to change the doctype from code (from within your module),  how to do that? Just the module level changes, not all portal level?

Like everyone else, I seem to be beating my head against the wall to make the modal popup extender work in a module in a way that doesn't require changing the doc type.

However, I don't seem to have any problem positioning the popup and in fact, the entire thing works great for me on Firefox.  I simply set the X and Y properities on the control before calling Show...  My problem is with the background (only in IE).  When I display the popup, the area within the module extends to some ungodly size and doesn't display the background coloring and obviously, nothing is disabled.  The popup does display as expected and it displays in the location I set the x and y properties to...  Adding the xml file for the skin doesn't seem to make a difference (IE still doesn't work and FF does).

What am I missing?  Every thread I've found seems to deal with positioning of popup, not problems with the background....

Also, beyond my control is the fact that I'm using dnn 4.5.1 as the dev platform...

Thanks for any thoughts!

In DNN 4.9 in default skin browsers renders sites with DOCTYPE = DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional. So we get ModapPopupExtender working fine. I'm happy.
