I have working on my dnn expertise and am attempting to upload a new skin. I found one for free (trial version), and have loaded the zip file for that into my dnn directory. (Note: i am running all of this on my local machine). When i go to admin or host skins and choose upload skin, i browse to the location of the zip file for the new skin, and chooose upload. Afterwards, i get an error regarding "dll and dnn, etc" are restricted file types.

I know that I can make these file types permissable, but do i have to do all that to upload a new skin or am i just missing something?

You could unzip the skin and place it under \portals\_\default\skins\FolderNameForTheSkin

You would see the skin then.

The unzipping of the skin is not working for me. Am i missing something? The skin packages that i have downloaded each contain many files. When i place a new direcotory with FolderNameForSkin under Portals/_default/skins, then choose skin upload from the site settings page the file expects me to choose more than just the directory the new skin is in.

I am not sure which file to choose..

you do  not unzip or manually create a directory, simply upload the zip file.
