Just installed DNN for the first time.  If I run the website locally everything works just fine, but when I run it on the remote server I get the following message:

"The site you are trying to view does not currently have a default page. It may be in the process of being upgraded and configured."

The script to install all the database objects worked fine.  I am wondering if the Directory Indexes is not set properly,

I set the Index to Default.aspx but still the same results.

Any help is appreciated,

make sure, you have the remote address added as portal alias: login to DotNetNuke as superuser ("host"), go to portals in host settings, select your portal, scroll down to the far end of the settings page where you can add the remote address.
