Sneak Peek #2 blog posted
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1536/Default.aspx

It includes a link to an 11 minute video which demonstrates the ability to extend the module's functionality through the use of 'Repository Custom Controls'

Feedback Welcome!

2/ ... when you access through permalink an item, and you can not change category once you have accessed a permalink item !!... To me, this is more critical, it is like if your repository is empty, people trying to change category without seeing anything...

3/ For the pop-up, I am loosing a lot of credibility in video forum because my links "do not work" as they should...

Just to butt in here...

#2 sounds like a problem to me. Are you saying that if one arrives at the repository via a permalink, the remaining categories have no content visible in them? That's certainly an issue.

#3 I'm unsure on this.. is there an actual bug or is it simply that some people are disabling Javascript? If it's the latter then tell them to enable it. If it's the former then it might need more detail?

Ok... I went and read back and looked at the other thread as well. This is one of those problems where I do feel that applications need to change to suit the browsing habits of users.. and these days that means that popup blockers need to be dealt with in an idiot-proof manner. I find that most users are unaware that when something is being blocked and seldom know how to allow it through. They simply think the site is broken.

If it really is rendering the links on a way that causes them to always be blocked, then perhaps there could be another way to render them..  a modal dialogue?

I agree with you to an extent Rob but, on the other hand, why should the application change to accomadate somebody else's badly written popup blocker? In dealing with staff and students I've seen a ton of different popup blockers. The worst one is Norton Symantec's which seems to be installed as part of every new laptop/computer put out by Dell/HP/etc because what it considers a popup is frankly stupid. The best I've seen is Google's and Microsoft's. If a popup is a result of a user manually clicking a link then it's not a popup. If it's code behind that's causing a new window to open then it's a popup and should be blocked. Symantec's programmers are just lazy and block any kind of new window opening while Google's and Microsoft's will at least realize that it was a user initiated action.

Well, if this were a commercial product then the answer would be simple - Because the customer-needs drive the functional requirements. Naturally, customer-focus is off the table when the software is free.

That said, if this is just Norton causing the trouble then I would make efforts to educate the site visitors. Norton is a vile piece of software that thrives off generating fear in the minds of new pc owners.

Ok, since you are talking of some commercial product here, i think it is allowed. Yes, I had lots of comments from users who can not open my links, because of Norton being pre-install on any new PC. But also because of pop-up blocker enable (by default !!) in IE. Try on THIS DNN website to go to the DIRECTORY page, and try opening a links with IE pop-blocker enable (standard and default feature), you are obliged to add this website to the trusted website... If people disable the small message asking to "add trust website" ("do not warn me"), then nothing happens.... And people think that the website is not done correctly. Educating people is not the solution.

For others problems, Robax, for permalink problem & Category, yes, this is true, you can check it on my website (you can not do the test on the directory page of DNN, because the "category drop-down box" have been removed... Maybe for this reason ??? I intend to do the same). And concerning other problems, see below :

1/ Search gives problem. Try on THIS DNN website to search for "BSI", BSI being an item in the directory page (do this in the search box at the top of the page). You will have this result:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/ResourceDirectory/tabid/702/grm2id/351/Default.aspx
(but you won't find BSI in the result, because it is mixed up with others). Now, remove the "grm2" in the URL, and it works:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/ResourceDirectory/tabid/702/id/351/Default.aspx

Take note that if you search using the small search box in repository itself, you do not have only BSI, but plenty of results, BSI being the second one... Strange !

2/ Permalink:
Try this permalink: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Default.aspx?tabid=702&id=351
You see comments (0), but if you go directly to the directory pages, you will see that comments exist for this item !!
Concerning the other problem, you can not test it on this website, because the drop down box for category does not show. But test it on my website, click on a permalink, and then try changing category, you can not...

3/ For pop-up, I am currently testing a possible solution provided by Steve.
