I'm trying to set up a fresh install of the lastest release.  Environment is: Vista OS (I know - puke, Vista sucks), Visual Studio 2005 Pro, SQL 2005 Express, local starter kit install using the template.

The site is running locally (after 3 tries - had to use the Auto wizard option), but when I try to log on with the default Admin or Host passwords I get to the required password change screen and no matter what I enter it just keeps telling me passwords are case sensitive.

I've verified that these 2 usernames where created in the database during the Auto install.  I can register a new user and log on with it fine.

Any ideas please please?

The admin and host passwords should not expire. If you didn't change the passwords, they should be dnnhost and dnnadmin by default. If that isn't working, i would install the site again.

I've created another new web site from the template with the same results.  I have not changed the default passwords (dnnhost or dnnadmin), that's that problem - apparantly in this version you are required to change these passwords at first login.  This is the part that is not working.  The default passwords send me directly to the "change password to continue" screen.  I can't get past it, and I've checked the default password complexity rules in the web.config.  This isn't my very first barbaque at least... :)

I've started stepping throught the code (uugh)... just shoot me now.  Maybe I should try the install package instead of the "easy" starter kit....

Here's a sort-of workaround if someone else hits this problem and just wants to start evaluating the system.

To log in as admin or host, just manually open the database, find the "Users" table, open it (Show Table Data).  Then find the records for the host and admin and change the values in the 'UpdatePassword' field from true to false.  Warning: this means you won't be required to change these passwords.  When you actually get logged in, the system also warns you that the accounts are still at their default.

Now, why I can't change the password is another issue.  I also tried using the Admin; User Accounts menu (once logged in) to change the admin password, but that did not work either.  I also noted that the Host username does not appear on the User Accounts menu at all (probably a good security measure though).

Has no one else seen this?  Or has no one else done a new install of 4.05.05 on a local Vista machine?  (P.S. I also tried just VWD and the manual install package with the same result.)

Hello Kenny...

Yes, we've had this problem as well along with a host of others doing a new install.  I can't say that the (these) issues are strictly linked to vista.  A new install of any 4.5.x version has been giving us a ton of grief.  We back tested through 4.5.4 and 4.5.3 had issues so... The way we have gotten around all this is to implement the "install" version of 4.4.1 and then apply the upgrade version of 4.5.5.

We are unable to identify the specific cause but integrated security and Ctrl+F5 in VS Pro 2005 works fine and brings up a usable installation of DNN on our all our machines following this methos.  We've used/tried XP, 2000 AS and Win 2003.  All combinations have displayed issues with the 4.5.x installs and starter kits.  Though for all reading we have not tested going back to the 4.4.1 starter kit.  Just as long as we are able to have 4.5.5 installs that we are able to train and test against is good enough.

We'll keep this forum posted on how we do with vista and orca beta 2...  gulp...
