I installed DNN 4. It's running, but when I go to the ASP.NET Web Admin Tool (WAT) and click on the Security tab, I get the following message:

There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

The Application and Provider tabs do not give errors.  Why is this error being thrown?

Thanks in advance!

Barry

Not sure - probably due to the ApplicationName field (which dnn manages rather than using web.config to set it) - but you shouldn't actually use this tool to manage users/roles.

Use Dnn's own management tools as Dnn uses some of its own tables to manage enhanced information on Roles and Users.

I was trying to access the security tab in WAT because I am trying to understand how to set up Single Sign On between the portal and peripheral applications.  For example, I've have the TimeTracker starterkit installed and it is using the same database.  I have its web.config configured to use the same machine code and applicationName ("/") as DNN 4.  But, when I look at the asp application table, DNN 4 is actually using "-1" (host) and "0" as an application ID, even though the web.config file says "/" is the applicationName.

My goal is to have people register only on DNN4 and for all roles to be managed using DNN.  I will assign roles in DNN that will enable them to have certain privileges not just in the portal, but also in peripheral applications, such as Time Tracker.  I can't even get them to share users, let alone roles at this point.  I realize that once I get them to share users, that I will have to rewrite TimeTracker to use DNN's user and role tables.  For this, I was going to leverage DNN's providers.

Please let me know if you have a solution for this.  It is a bit of a show stopper for using DNN if I can't get SSO working.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Barry
