Hi All

Where should a newbie start with learning DNN?

What are the most important concepts to understand?

Thanks

Welcome to DNN.

If you have just downloaded the code, read through the installation guide to get started installing DNN.

If you have a site ready to start building check out the Guided Tour http://www.dotnetnuke.com/guidedtour/ and Online Help http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Documentation/DotNetNukeOnlineHelp/tabid/787/Default.aspx to find out how to add content and configure settings on your site.

I think important concepts to understand from an Administrators perspective are:

  • One install = multiple portals: one installation of DNN can contain multiple sites each with their own users, security roles and content.
  • Security Roles - these control access to view and edit pages and modules on your site. If you are building a site with lots of different levels of access it pays to set up the right security roles to begin with.
  • Skins - Skins are the page and module designs on your site. A skin can be applied across the whole site, or  it can be different on each page. This allows for alot of flexibility in both design, layout and functionality. Skins typically include a number of [TOKEN]s which are replaced with functionality such as Register and Login links, privacy policies etc.
