I'd like to be able to provide a userlist for registered users on my portal, similar to the way 'admin -> user accounts' works.  (perhaps different fields displayed)

Is there a way to do this? (or are there specific custom modules needed?)

Alternatively, could this be done using the sql table module?

Have you seen the Smart-Thinker User Profile module - check out the poker player search on PokerDIY?  - there is a templated UserDirectory view so you can show the users of your site (you define templates of HTML and add fields to the profile). You can make it look anyway you want and you can customise which fields (if any) you want to allow the user to search on. You can also switch from list to profile view... download the trial module from Smart-Thinker to see if it suits your needs.

There are a couple of ways to do it - depends if you have time or if you have money.
