We have several sites (v.04.04.01) that are having problems.

The application shuts down and restarts several times a day.  Sometimes the restart does not happen for several hours after the shutdown - so the sites are down.

This is happening on several different hosting environments.  I am working on one site to try to find the cause.  I have stopped all schedules except purge schedule history and this is set for once a day.  Last night the site stopped/started 3 times in 12 hours.

This is really causing our customers problems - their sites are not reliable.

If anyone has any suggestions - please tell me.

thanks,

Cmartin

Forgive me if I misunderstood... it seems you are complaining about the very design of .NET platform. Application is made to shut down due to inactivity. In other words, if nobody is requesting pages on a particular site for a certain amount of time, the application shuts down. And it will not restart until a request is made.

While there are great reasons for such a design, it causes a delay for that first (awakening) hit. So, to avoid such delays we deploy a so-called Keep-Alive service - some software that makes periodic calls to a .NET application to keep it from shutting down. An example of such soft is KeeperUp (available on showcovered for 10 bucks) - it will call your site and send you an email if it's down.

Just to give you a litle more info - the back-office app we wrote for a business client shuts down at around 6 pm every single day and doesn't restart until the early-bird employee hits it at around 7:30 in the morning. It's just the way it is.

Also, if you upload new dll to the site or make changes to Web.config - this, too, will shut the app down. That's the mechanism of .NET platform

Thank you for the information.  I had no idea this was 'working as designed'.

I will setup keep alive -

Thanks,

Try to increase timeout in settings of a IIS pool "IIS/Application Pools/<DNN Pool>/Properties/Perfomance/Idle timeout"
