If anyone can lend some insight, I'd very much appreciate it...

I am getting the following error on installation of DNN 3.2.2...

Server Error in '/project' Application.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +114
DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +93
DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +3721
System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication+IExecutionStep.Execute() +60
System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +87

I have no idea where to look for this one. I am running SQL Server 2000, IIS 6, Windows 2003 Enterprise.
As noted in another forum reply I found on installation, I have:

1) corrected the SQL Server login info in the release.config file.

2) renamed the release.config file to web.config (this step wasn't in the Professional DotNetNuke ASP.NET Portals book that I was using, but was in the installation DOC I checked after).

4) set the permissions on the DotNetNuke folder by ADDing a user (clicking on Add button) called "Network Service" and giving them FULL CONTROL, removing FULL CONTROL rights from EVERYONE.

Any ideas how I can locate this error????

thanks!

You are using the Install version right and not the source?  The /project is throwing me off.  It should say either / or /dotnetnuke.

Cheers,

I am using the source version because I want to check out the code and be able to modify it beyond the scope of the database interaction (I have worked with the IBUYSPY portal in the past). Is this the wrong way to go at it?

The name of the site came about because we have tried to install using "/dotnetnuke" unsuccessfully and wanted to try with a fresh start after all the security issues were tweaked since the last go round (or so we thought). Wrong also?

THANKS!

It looks like it's having problems with the portal alias.  Check your portalalias table in the database a make sure you have /localhost/project.

Since oyu are using the source verison what I would do is create a directory called <drive of your choosing.>:\DotNetNuke and unzip the source in this folder.  Then recreate your virtual directory under IIS and call it project or whaatever.  Go to http://localhost/project and let the DB create and the install happen even if you get an error. Then open the DNN solution in VS 2003 and if the drive you are using isn't C:\  let the IDE refactor the references to the new location and then do a build.

After the build go back to the website and see if everything is good.  Start with a clean directory, new DB and new virtual directory.  Permissions should be for the install directory network services and aspnet useres full control.

Cheers and good luck...
