This is kind of a dumb question, but...

How do I change the icon in the browser address bar from the DNN one to my own?  Where does this icon reside and what kinds of file types can I use?

you need to place a file "favicon.ico" in the root of your portal (you can upload using the file manager). There are tools and web services available for creating it.

Take a look at the root of your website. There you'll find a file called favicon.ico. So just fire up your favorite image editor and create your own icon (usually 16x16 px) and name it favicon.ico and place it into the root of your site. There are also a few favicon create around the web ... just google it.
