I second the above.  This also applies to all modules, I would NOT install the source version of any module on my production site.

For modules like the Survey module, the only version is the source version. It does not present a security risk nor is there a difference in performance.

Michael,

I would disagree slightly with the performance point, I have noticed that non-source compiled modules are slightly faster, but it tends to only matter on very large modules...and only on inital load...but I still have noticed a slight improvement.

As a side note why is the survey module deployed with a source version?

I agree there is a slight difference in start-up between compiled modules and compiles assemblies (.dll's). It was the running performance I was refeereing to. Since application start up of DNN is so large anyway, making modules like the survey assemblies is not going to save that much time. If performance maters to you you do not want DNN to shut down .

Because there is no performece difference when the module is running there is no reason not to use the source version. Most importantly, users of the free Visual Web developer can see the code and alter it.

Perhaps this could be stressed more on the download page and in the literature?

I, too, had no idea on which to download and install, so I went with the 'source' install under the assumption that it gives me all the files I need to tweak tokens and modules and whathaveyou. :)

It wasn't until ErikVB set me straight that there is no difference in the source and install version, given that I am merely ftp'ing the website directory contents to my server...sort of confusing to a layman. :)
