I am new to this .net and dotnetnuke stuff and was wondering what is the best free message board platform out there?

I recommend http://www.forumotion.com, they have free ipb and phpbb forums. When you register you will have great support and access to mods for your forum. You can also get by ad removal with out even paying! Try it out im happy with it.

The core forum module is free. That's the one we're using in this thread. There is also ActiveForums from ActiveModules (not free)

For some reason, PressTopia DNN forum is never mentioned when this question is asked.  I had a client choose between DNN Core, Active Forums and PressTopia based on merits of the program and he chose PressTopia.  I am not sure how happy he is with it, but he set it up himself and never once asked for assistance which is something that rarely happens.

Come back in a month and you will see the latest version of DNN forums, you are seeing a version of DNN forums right now which is great, but it does have, er, (cough!), quite a few issues- however the next version looks like a DNN killer app so far...

You can see the latest version up and running on www.dnnforums.com - download of this module will be made available soon once it has passed our standard tests.
