I am building a new site that will hopefully have 100K plus users (crossing fingers), thousands of articles and forum posts. I am looking at two providers. Any suggestions on what is more important web space or DB space?

1and1

Web Space 250 GB

Transfer 2,500 GB

MS Database 200 MB

FTP Accounts 25

webhost4life

Web Space 2 GB

Transfer Unlimited

MS Database 2 GB

FTP Accounts 100

Thanks,

Sean

You have a look more to Database space if you will not upload many files for download.  Also with so much users I think you must look about the included Transfer too.  I know a german provider too, that will have Hosting Plans and Servers that beginns on 3,89 € / Month.  If you are interest look on http://www.domainbox.de .

For what it is worth, with 100k users I would think you will outgrow a 200MB database. Most of the stuff that takes up space on your webspace is files - photos and attachments in the most part (and for photos, this is also affected by what gallery module you use), so all the articles and forum data will go in your database. Have a think on how many words a day will get added to your site, and figure that into your maths. You will probably also outgrow 2GB disk space depending on photo/attachement upload rules.

To be honest, the bigger problem is lilely to be performance. I have no real life experience of 1and1, but have seen comments... I was on WH4L, but finally moved because performance was so bad. Having said that, they have now upgraded the server. Admittedly my site was small (200 users), but even after startup, perforamce was still dreadful. I'm guessing you are going to have to look at something more than $9.99/month. I'm now on a PowerDNN Personal deal at $20/month (and happy with it apart from the SPAM filtering, which is dreadful). That said, depending on your hit rate, you may end up looking at a virtual server based service, which I think would give you more flexibility space wise.

My 2 cents...

Roger

Roger.....thanks for the 2 cents.... I think I wil stay away from WHFL.  The only thing missing form most providers is database space : (  I am trying to find the best provider to grow with. I don't want to have to move my site every few years!

Thanks again,

Sean

Personally with a planned 100K user base, I am not sure if you can even come close to hosting that without a dedicated box.

I know that I ran into problems on shared hosting when I hit 1200 visitors in a day....I guess it really depends on your user base.
