I am stuck with the task of updating an early version of DNN (V2.12) to the latest.  There is no upgrade path by the looks, and I think it's best not to even try anway :)

My aim is to run a parallel install of DNN.  My problems I feel I'm going to have, is naming (of the files, database, web etc).

The current DNN (V2.12) is live and all working.  It uses the name Dotnetnuke (database, db username and phyical location (c:\dotnetnuke).)  There are about 6 websites running.

What am I going to have to do to run up DNN V4.6 - in parallel to the existing install?

I have some no-ip.com addresses ready to use for the 'temp' (new) sites that I want to run up in parallel, and allow users to move content over (most sites are small and re-writing them all really won't take that much).

I would *like* to call the new instance DNNV46 (or something like that, perhaps just DNN2 is better, as then I can upgrade it to newer versions the name is generic to handle that).  Will I run into problems with every upgrade I do because I''m not using the "default" names for the DNN instance?

Cheers for your thoughts and help on this matter,  Duncan.

When you create the DNN database on your SQL Server you can call it whatever you want, just be sure to update the connection string properly!

Thanks Mitchel, I will certainly be sure to check the web.config file very carefully, and adjust my db logons carefully too.  Cheers,  Duncan.
