yes it's possible.

Every token looks for a setting in the xml file named "Roles" if found, then only people in the roles will see the token as rendered,

For example: having the setting below in your template.xml file will result in only members of the "Subscribers" role to see the Permalink. You can include multiple roles if you separate them with commas.

Hi Steve,

I tried the follwing modification to the template.xml file. Now the permalinlk only shows to Admin and host accounts???

    <Object>
        <Token>[PERMALINK]</Token>
        <Settings>
            <Setting>
                <Name>Roles</Name>
                <Value>Content Editors,Developers,Gold Membership,Platinum Membership,Silver Membership</Value>
            </Setting>
        </Settings>
    </Object>

strange. I re-tested the function and it appears to work as advertised.

There's nothing too sophisticated going on here, the value is simply passed to the core portalsecurity function.. so based on your example, the following code would execute...

if PortalSecurity.IsInRoles("Content Editors,Developers,Gold Membership,Platinum Membership,Silver Membership") then
  ' ... render tag

I would suggest double-checking your security roles to make sure you have the spellings correct, and I would ask that you double check your testing methodology. Are you sure that if you log in using an account that is an active member of one of the listed security roles, that you do not see the permalink?

Don't take offense, I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just that in my testing I'm not see that behavior. The Roles setting seems to work properly when I set it on any tag in the template/xml file.
