I've got a working DNN 4 portal up and running, but would like to have an exact copy on a different url. I need to let the users play around with editing and stucture on the dummysite before they are allowed to start editing on the "live" site. And with an exact copy of the live site to work with they have the current sturcture to work with without the risk of them fu*** up something on the live site... It's should probably use the same server and database, but I need to be sure they are working on a copy and NOT the live site...

anyone?

Login as host and go to Host > Portals, select the portal you want in the Export Template module, give it a name and descritption, and click the Export Template link. This can be used to import.

Sorry, got a little click happy... You can import the template using the site wizard. To import a template, it has to be in the Portals/_default directory. Also, know that the chances of you getting everything are not very likely. There will inevitably be modules that don't implement the IPortable interface.

Alternatively, you can copy the database, but I've never done that, so hopefully someone else can provide insight on that. I know some have chosen to backup/restore, but I've had bad experiences with that in the past (not with DNN).

I was trying the exact same thing, but seems I messed up...

Step 1) I created a portal on url xyz.com

Step 2) I copied all the contents from directory xyz.com to tuv.com

Step 3) I banged my head on my desk for several hours.

The result is; a mess

*sigh* Ok...I need help here....I was planning on using a temp url as a staging area, then move a completed portal to a different url, different directory, on the same host. Is this not possible?

I'm aware that there will always be a limited number of links e.g. that wouldn't work, but the problems I run into are different. The "server is redirecting into the unknown" really...
