I would offload all the site log data by shutting it down and using Google Analytics. Outside of matching a specific users usage, or by role, Google Analytics offers far more than the site log and its a free module to install and free service provided by google to use.

Thanks Crispy

That is how I am doing it pretty much now. I only started looking at the site log data due to users usage. One user logs in every 2 days and I had no idea why they would do it so often... still not sure although i know what pages and roughly for how long.

The other benefit is know who came from where... I have not yet sorted or found a suitable DNN tracking type package, for emails etc so with this, many users I can see how they came to the website (specifics). I would like to track people via email referrals from other users but it just doesn't seem to be offered. Will look at the affiliation module soon, see if there is anything at all I can get out of it but it doesn't seem to link to registered users as I would like all of a role to be included.

Cheers

David

The affiliates will probably not work how you want to use them. I saw some module on snowy that mapped a user's path, but outside of that I don't think there is a good solution out there for this type of thing. You could track user registration via some profile property collected (ie. referral code) and run some report module against that. Even that does nothing but state how users were registered. As for you email notes there, not sure what that means unless you are referring to some type of referral code in the email.

You could also have this and combine it w/ 'goals' in analytics, assuming you know your outside links. The affiliates handles this, if you have your affiliates directing to your site using their affiliate ID, but you could also just use analytics to do this so long as the incoming links from affiliates have a destination point specified for them (I am sure there are other ways too). I am not sure what you are really after here, but it seems to me you just want to know how users got to your site which you can do one way or another using a profile property.

I think I can use the affiliates for sites that do direct to my site.... but what I would really like to be able to do I think would need to use cookies to track.

I have been using the Smart-thinker Referrals module which doesn't have tracking (and limited by DNN in how many characters the email can have), ideally users that join a particular role (most users) would be able to make referrals using the form and when anyone that is referred visits the site it tracks (eg for 3 months) that this came from a referral by User X.

In addition to this, the users would be able to copy a piece of code to their website for a banner link. Which does the same thing (like an affiliate) but the code is automatically generated on the user ID.

Probably difficult... I saw one site that had the banner link for all users, but that was a part of their Store Module whereas the one I went with (SDN) has no affiliate feature.  I have been thinking of getting a coder to do this for me... just budget is still too tight at the moment.

I'd like to discuss DNN hosting wtih CrystalTech with you. We have continuing long-term great experience (DNN 1) and 1 1/2 year old short term very bad experience (DNN 3) with them. I don't see a way to do private messaging here and I'd prefer to discuss this off the forum (Mick Ruthven - mruthven@impact-consult.com). Thanks...
