Here is how I set up my control panel, to make it almost invisible when minimized. Ii does not move page content, minimized or maximized, ie the page renders the same when logged in as admin as for normal users.

The top of the page as it looks when not logged in
Not logged in

Logged in as DNN admin. The control panel is minimized in the left, top corner of the browser window.Control panel when logged on as admin
Note that the page header / content has not moved / changed

Control panel expanded

The control panel expanded on top of the normal page content.

Modifications done in the skin.css file:

.controlpanel  {
 width: 0%;
 position:absolute;
 top: 0px;
 left: 0px;
 z-index: 1000;
 background-color: #ffffff;
 border: 1px silver dotted;
}

Comments:

  • width 0% /* Minimizes the window as needed */
  • position:absolute;  /* Makes sure control panel does not move /  take space from other page components */
  • top: 0px;   /* Top coordinate in browser window
  • left: 0px;   /* Left coordinate in browser window
  • z-index: 1000;   /* On top of everything*/
  • background-color: #ffffff; /* Background covers normal web page */
  • border: 1px silver dotted ;  /* Neat border * /

Now, also minimize the texts:

In Admin=>Languages => Language Editor => Local Resources => Admin => Control Panel => App Local Resources => IconBar.ascx

Change Mode.Text from "Mode: " to empty
Change ModeEdit.Text from "Edit" to "E"
Change ModeView.Text View to "V"
Change Visibility.Text from "Show Control Panel?" to "X" (It can not be empty)

Done!

I think it is neat and it lets the logged on admin view the pages more like how regular users see them.
