Is it possible to have insert a new row into a table when a module is added to a page (and, visaversa, have it removed when the module is deleted from said page)?

I'm trying to create a module that, when used, only updates one row ever. The same moduleID should only have one row associated with it. I've been using databinding on the ascx page, but I may need to create the controls dynamically in the code behind. The problem is that I have a working insertItemTemplate formview but need it to convert to an editItemTemplate if the data is already there. Or, can I have to formviews on the page but only one is shown depending on the condition?
