I get the following stacktrace on server, with debug=true in web.config:

Stack Trace:

[ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: type]
   System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) +2768503
   DotNetNuke.Framework.Reflection.CreateObject(String ObjectProviderType, String ObjectProviderName, String ObjectNamespace, String ObjectAssemblyName, Boolean UseCache) +582
   DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider.CreateProvider() +47
   DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider..cctor() +13

[TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider' threw an exception.]
   DotNetNuke.Common.Globals.GetUpgradeStatus() +67
   DotNetNuke.Common.Global.CheckVersion() +132
   DotNetNuke.Common.Global.Application_Start(Object Sender, EventArgs E) +477

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.832; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.832

When accessing the server remotely, this is the error:

DotNetNuke Error: - Version 04.06.02

The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider' threw an exception.

Please advise.

Best regards,

Dragoş

Be sure that all of your upgrade files were copied successfully into their respective locations and see if this causes the error to go away.

I saw a similar error with the GetUpgradeStatus call returning a null value after upgrading from 4.5.5 to 4.6.2 using the "Upgrade" package to  upgrade.

After wasting several hours, I fixed my problem by removing the bin sub-directory and all it's contents and replacing it with the one from the "Source" zip file. Just remember that you may need to copy back the dll files for any extra modules that you have installed afterwards. Mitchel recommends using the "Install" package rather than the "Upgrade" package - and I think he's right.

Hope that helps with your problem!

A bit more info on this - the modules in /bin are exactly the same in all the 4.6.2 packages, source, install & upgrade so this isn't fixed by different versions of the dll's.

When I upgraded another site, I tried removing old modules from /bin instead and the problem appears to be caused by old DotNetNuke.Modules.****.SqlDataProvider.dll files and/or the DotNetNuke.Provider.SQL****Provider.dll files.

I'm not clear what the fix for this is.

Looking at the web server logs, I see the following exception occured during the upgrade process (yes, NETWORK SERVICE  has full rights on the application directory). Does this make sense to anyone, or lead to some clarity? I am really stuck in the water here: luckily this site is not important, but I have nine others to upgrade that are, and I am just baffled.

Process information:
    Process ID: 6028
    Process name: w3wp.exe
    Account name: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

Exception information:
    Exception type: TypeInitializationException
    Exception message: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Security.Membership.MembershipProvider' threw an exception.
