First of all Mike you are doing a great job as lead, keep up the good work.

Issue: I just did a full blown upgrade from 3.3.5 all the way to 4.6.2 which previously had been using the AD module of old. When I did the upgrade I treated it like a new install per advice from this article: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx which worked great. Under that method the web config file starts from a clean one and you bring over only the bare necessity vaules so AUTH was not uncommented during upgrade. Once i upgraded I also followed the new way of uploading the AD provider through the HOST Settings Screen since it wasnt defaultly installed. That installed with no issues, however when I go to ADMIN > AUTHENTICATION it throws an error on under the ACTIVE DIRECTORY section (null reference) do to the fact the "Authentication Type" drop down is completely empty.

Since the source is not yet avaliable is their any guidance on where it is pulling these values from so I can go see if they exist or not.

Thanks in advance.

I ran into the same problem with one of my sites and even with the source I wasn't able to figure out the cause. However the upgrade was time critical so I did a work around (basically started from scratch) instead of totally solving it. When it happened I assumed it was because of a something that I'd done in the past that hosed the site (I've done a lot of modifications over the last couple of years) and I hadn't seen any posts here on the forums about people having the same problem. Even though it's throws an error Authentication still works or it did in my case.

I just thought of a possible reason but can't test until tomorrow when I'm at work and can access the old database backups and my backups of the original site. Let me do some testing in the morning and I'll let you know.

Found it!!! I fired up my vpc and found I had an old copy of the site that gave me issues on there so I went debugged it. I can't believe I missed this the first time or why all my other upgrades worked without a hitch other than perhaps it's something that's appeared in the DNN 3 versions and was changed later on but never removed. I'll have to look into that later.

Anyways, open up your ModuleSettings table in the database and look for AD_ProviderTypeName. Change the value thats in there (something like DotNetNuke.Security......) and replace the cell with DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory.ADSI.ADSIProvider, DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory. That should do the trick.

Wow Mike you are the man.

That fixed worked for me too.  Wouldn't be a bad idea to add an UPDATE to the Provider install .SqlDataProvider file that updates those values. Couldn't hurt since most people will not have them it will have no effect, but for us oldtimer upgrade hold outs it wouldn't be an issue.

Also you are correct it was working even though it was throwing the error. I just didnt realize it cause I was logged in as host. So when I hit the site after reading your post I autologged in before applying the fix.

Again I can't thank you enough for your response and hard work!

PS Do you have a PayPal account? If so I will send you some money to have a dinner on me.
