Mike,

yes a great point - automate the process, but I think perhaps there should be a way of providing this information (about changes to web.config) in the release. Ooops - maybe that was written in the doco but who reads a manual ??!!??

Still - I am not complaining about DNN, it is the best thing for my business ;-)

Fresh Install of 4.7 -- same issue:

A critical error has occurred.
Could not load the assembly 'DotNetNuke.Authentication.LiveID'. Make sure that it is compiled before accessing the page.

I have tried both the upgrade and the install.  The portal loads, but as soon as you click login, it says that. Thank god I didnt do it to my live website.

Any ideas????

To fix this, I had to restore from backup my original files, and copy over the install files.. not the upgrade.  Why did the DNN framework guys even put up an upgrade file up there if its not going to work for anyone?

I found that the packages for LiveID and OpenID did not install their perspective DLLs.  In the 4.7 install folder, If you look in the Install\Package folder, you should see:
 - LiveID_01.00.00_Install.zip
 - OpenID_01.00.00_Install.zip

In the manifest files in these, they reference a Providers folder below the bin folder in the root directory.  Since it didn't exist, I created it and added the DLLs from the packages, which worked.

A simpler approach approach:

  1. Create the Providers folder under bin
  2. Copy LiveID_01.00.00_Install.zip and OpenID_01.00.00_Install.zip to the \Install\Package folder
  3. open website and run http://localhost/dotnetnuke/install/install.aspx?mode=installresources, which should correctly install the packages.

If the above doesn't work, do it manally as I did

I upgraded from 4.5.3 to 4.9.0 and I received the assembly error. All of the files and folders specified in the first post were correct. Just copy/move the dll files from the \bin\providers to \bin and try again. That solved it for me.
