Like many others have through the years, we are trying to decide which forum software to use with DNN, and it seems to be a quesion about if we should use the free DNN Forum or Active Modules. My impression is that at least until the last DNN Forum release, the ActiveForums package was simply considered a better choice, if the price itself wasn't a problem. Is that still true or has the DNN Forum closed the gap now (and perhaps even went further)? So far, I have only spent a few minutes evaluating both products, and my initial impression is that ActiveForum still seem to hold its ground and offer a better and more roubust solution, but I really don't have any hard facts to back that claim up with, it's just a feeling.

Please note that I don't mean any disrespect what so ever to you guys working on the free DNN forum, you are doing a really good job on maintaining a free forum modul, and I really dont feel that you can expect a free product to be able to compete with a commercial ones for obvious reasons (even though there are numerous cases where the free products are just as good as the commercial ones). Being a commercial customer as we are, price really isn't a major factor for us, at least if the commercial products are better than the free ones, but instead features, stability, support etc. is high on the list.

I hope that I am not wrong to post this question here, as it is quite related to the DNN Forum Module and no one is probably better suited to answer it than you guys working on it.

PS The fact that the dotnetnuke.com crashes with a "Runtime error" when trying to post this is a bit ironic :-)

Hi

I dont think that active forums is more robust, just look at the user base and thread counts etc for DNN forums.

However, active forums is better looking and has an easier interface for the users to use.  It also has better fuctionality

And yes of course, no disrepect to the DNN team most of these guys have their own jobs and do this for nothing

Hope that helps

Perhaps "roubust" was a bad choice of words as I was actually thinking about the same aspects that you mention, usability, looks etc. Are you refering to ActiveForums compared to the old DNN Forum or the current one, which havn't been out more than a few weeks by the impression I got?

Hi

I am refering to the new one, the one we are using at the moment.  Active forums is just better in terms of its look and feel and fuctionality but the support isnt as good so watch out

Cheers

This is a fallacious argument; there are probably more Ford Focus on the road than 700 series BMWs in the United States.  To argue that 'thread counts' somehow indicate the robustness of a module is analogous to arguing that the Ford Focus is better built than the the higher-end BMWs because of the user base and number on the road.

As an economist, I must recommend that you control for price and then test your hypothesis again, sir. :)
