I've successfully installed 3.2 on my 2003 server and ran it for a while, but I want to change to version 4. I removed everything and unziped the v.4 install package to my server.  After going through all of the setup, I tried the site and got the following message :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
- the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
- the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did, however, give NETWORK SERVICE all the necessary permissions, as well as the IUSR and ASP.NET accounts.  Does anyone know what the problem may be?

I got the same problem. I don't see the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE.  My server is on a separate Windows 2003 server and it is a member of the domain.  My Active Directory is running on a Small Business Server 2003 box.

The errors in the event log is ASP.NET.2.0.450727.0   EventID 1309

The account name is NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

I am also having this problem.  Using SQL2K (SP4) and W2K3 Server.  I have entered a more detailed explanation of the steps I completed (per documentation and other searches in the last couple days).  Still no love.
