Attempting upgrade from 4.4.3 to 4.6.2 - I'm struggling without any simple guide to upgrade (newbie)

I've built a new web.config using

SiteSQLserver connection strings in connections string and appSettings - also changed machineids (but couldn't find a reference to installation date)

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Line 80:
Line 81:             'Determine the Upgrade status and redirect to Install.aspx
Line 82:             Select Case GetUpgradeStatus()
Line 83:                 Case Globals.UpgradeStatus.Install
Line 84:                     If AutoUpgrade Then
Source File: D:\FTP\cmorton08\Htdocs\CMS\App_Code\Global.asax.vb    Line: 82
