Ok here is the scenario.

I need to move a portal from one host to another.  Since there is no way to extract a single portal from a host (as far as I'm aware at least --- please enlighten me if I'm wrong) I'm just rebuilding the portal from scratch on the new host and manually copying and pasting  the content and reinstalling the needed modules.

So the URLs for the site will be different and the urls for the old site will no longer exist.  How do I go about setting up a 301 redirect in dnn for a page that no longer exists in the db?

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/164720/scope/posts/Default.aspx.  Do a search on just the word "transfer" here and there are quite a few answers/threads.  The thread I've posted here makes it sound fairly easy, but I suspect there is more to it than just that.  I'd give it a try and see if it works.  I've also seen several articles about transfering a localhost test site to a live server so you don't have to recreate everything from scratch like you are doing, those might apply or at least give you more detailed information on the process of transfering from one server to another.  You could also try a google search for "transfer dnn" or similar phrases.  I've not tried any of these approaches myself, but the guidance is there if you look and there are step by step instructions out there, I just don't have the url's to those.

Hope this is of some help,

Rick

Thanks for your reply Rick.

I'd have the same concern with that approach as the last poster ... re-writing other portals on the host that I want to keep.

I think that I may have found an answer to my dilemma

http://urlrewriting.net/en/Default.aspx

Its a free redirect tool that just requires a few additional lines in the web.config.

I've been testing it out and it appears to be working like a charm.

I  caught wind of this on Tom Kraak's website http://seablick.com/blog.aspx

He has some very good articles on SEO up there.

Thanks again for your help!
