I am very new to DNN.  I have been instructed to add some funtionality to a DNN based portal.  The functionality consists of letting users input and data based on a simple sql server schema of about 6 tables.

This would be very easy for me to do if it was a standalone application.  However, I am not sure how to code the application within DNN.  Would this functionality need to be added as a module?  I need to have it flow within an existing DNN portal.  I also need to be able to use the security mechanisms to allow certain users to just view the data and others to edit.  Is the only way to do this in DNN is to create a module or is there a way to just build full .aspx pages that can tie into the security mechanism?

yes, functionality needs to be added as a module - but this is an advantage, as you can take care of all the services, the DNN framework offers.

Developing a module is very simple as it is pretty much like building standard user controls (.ascx files).

Have a look at Michael Washington's tutorials over at http://dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com.  I will also be posting tutorials on my website in the near future!
