Excel by default locks the file when being edited. I have users that edit an excel file on a regular basis and would like to not have to copy-paste the file to their machine and then copy-paste it back to the folder on the DNN file system. However, when they do edit it directly from the file system, and another person tries to open it, it gives this error: The process cannot access the file [Phone List.xls] because it is being used by another process.

Is there a way around this to force the file to open and display the most recent save? If not, we may need to change a setting on the Excel file?

Thanks in advance!

Open the document and then open Help.  Look up the term sharing.  This should help you with your problem - depending on the version(s) of Excel being used..

You could use user defined table module instead of Excel document.

Also note that module content can be exported to xml and then opened in MS Office Excel 2007 easyly (unfortunately you can not edit it and then import modified file back in).

I shared the workbook, but this did not seem to correct my solution. It did as far as being able to open the file through the actual file system. However, when I try to open a file that is currently open on another person's machine, it gives me an error page. Based on the help in excel, it stated it should open it "Read-Only" or at least give the user the option to view it read-only.
