I would really like to be able to connect a DNN portal to my enterprise oracle db can I do that here?  I was under the impression I had to use a third party app.

From what I can gather, we're using the following:

    CSS STYLES FOR IBUYSPY PORTAL
    v1.0, 01/2001

And it doesn't sound like there has ever been any 'native' oracle connection functionality.  There is one person still on this project that said he thinks they basically just ripped all the SQL out and replaced it with oracle.  Is that to say simply the connection string in the config files or the way the pages actually communitcate to the db.

Thanks,

Curious about how this works with my oracle db. (Micah)

I'm kind of lost by your above post. What version of DotNetNuke are you running? Or are you running the IBS Portal application?

Chris,

Sorry, that was all over.  I have an application that is running an IBS portal.  The application does not use SQL Server of any kind, rather Oracle 9i and 10g.  I was checking out the newest version of DNN as we're launching a new version of the product and wanted to look at this product and see about upgrading/starting over with this.  A developer who has been around a while said he seems to remember someone "ripping out the SQL Server stuff" and inserting Oracle.  I don't exactly know what he means and I'm curious about the level of effort.

I then noticed this "if using Oracle..." when I was setting up a test site and was curious what it meant.  Hoping that it meant there was a 'native' connection to Oracle built in that would help me avoid "ripping" apart.

I hope this makes some sense.

Thanks,

Micah

Now that makes a bit more sense.

DNN uses the Provider model, so it is possible to substitute an Oracle dataprovider for the default Sql data provider. This would allow you to run everything off of an Oracle DB, rather than MSSQL.

I believe there's even a third party that has written an Oracle dataprovider.

From a business perspective, we try to guide people away from using other dataproviders, as you will find that most modules you can purchase or download for free, won't have Oracle support, so you would have to write a custom provider for each of those as well. It is possible, but in the long run it is usually cheaper to just go with SQL if you don't have the resources to write each of those providers yourself.

Okay, great.  Thanks!

I'm wondering if I can link my Oracle tables to the DNN SQL tables and proceed that way.

Any thoughts on that?

Thanks,

Micah
