Debug

If you have the source to a module what are the steps to go through to actually debug the module?  Is is possible in vs2005 to run a module in a debug mode like other .net apps?  If so what are the steps to make this work?  I opened the .vb files and inserted break points but it doesnt seem to work... the module loads and my break points are never hit...

I should say that I installed the commercial version of the module then put the source into the folders later.. so perhaps this is my problem... I have the source (own it) so I am free to modify it I just cant seem to figure out how you properly debug a module in DNN. I have the environment setup.. (i can run the app from within vs2005) but my debug break points dont seem to do anything.

Thanks for any help you can offer..

Is the module that you've purchased a WAP model, meaning does it have a Project file for the module itself? If not then it probably follows the website project model which means you will have to open the DNN website on your local machine in VS and execute that site in Debug.

What module is this, the developer might have configured things slightly differently, and perhaps even put documentation online for how to work with the module.

Are you opening the project file in VS2k5?

If so, I would check the project properties, make sure it's starting up a URL for debug, and point that URL to your local DNN instance address such as http://localhost/dotnetnuke_2

I m not sure I understand.... yes I am using vs2005.

  • What I have done thus far is download the runtime for DNN...
  • Extract to C:\DNN then go into VS2005
  • Open the website C:\DNN
  • Install the PA for the module
  • Extract the source over the PA

Are you saying that a Module can be opened up for development outside of the root of the website? IMy understanding from all the demos online is that to develop a module you start with the DNN project itself as the actual website you open.. However, if this is true (it can be done alone) arent there dll files that need to be referenced or something in the project?  When I open the project file that is in the folder and look at the properties the project is setup Application Type: Class Library.  The Start Action is "Start Project"

Thanks for your help...
