Once again my lack of knowledge with AD is going to show; I took a look at our domain and the actual group of people is down about 4 levels deep.  (Domain>Group>Sales>SalesReps) So would my group be called exactly the same as the last group or how would that be set up in DNN?  Do you have any good reading (books or posts) which I could reference?

The group name should be identical to the "Group name (pre-Windows 2000):" field when you look at the group properties in Active Directory Users and Computers.

Without seeing the AD itself I can't really say. Are Sales and SalesReps shown as folders or as objects (you open them and they have a tab that says Members)? If SalesReps is an object then that's the role you want to create in DNN.

As for reference, there's a ton of books and links out there on Active Directory but this one looks good (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/technologies/directory/activedirectory/stepbystep/default.mspx).

Within the top level node there are several other nodes (continents really) that have the same structure.  As long as this name is the same in DNN as it is in AD, they should sync and then I can allow only those users to log in, correct?  I want to make sure all the Sales Reps are included from all the nodes (continents) and not just one node.  I have a screen shot if you would like to see it but you would have to email me.

Hmmm it depends. Are these all separate domains (ie: SalesUSA, SalesUK, SalesCAN, etc) or does everyone sign into one domain? I've heard of problems with multiple domains and synchronization not working properly but I haven't got a multidomain setup to code against.

If you want to send me the screenshot that would be cool. My email is mhorton@telus.net.

Ok after reviewing AD a bit here is what I find: (for simplicity I have not included some nodes)

  • top level domain.net
    • Computers
    • CSG
      • Asia
      • Australia
      • Europe
      • USA
        • Canada
        • USA
          • Admin (not an object)
          • IT (not an object)
          • Sales (not an object)
          • XXX - Sales Management (has three heads for icon vs the folder with a phone book in it) Object?
          • XXX - Sales Internal (has three heads for icon vs the folder with a phone book in it) Object?
            • Sales Reps  (not an object)
            • Customer Service (not an object)

So I would assume the XXX-Sales Management is the object I am looking for to name the same in DNN as the others just appear to be folders with a phone book in it.

Sorry for what would seem like simple questions.
