Cutting edge is always fun! As I continue to add AJAX capabilities to various controls of a custom module I have run into a problem with using AJAX.WrapUpdatePanelControl to dynamically wrap an UpdatePanel around a module control containing a GridView. When an update panel is declaritively added to the control's markup in the .ascx file, the GridView behaves properly.  When it is dynamically added by calling AJAX.WrapUpdatePanelControl in the module control's Init handler, the RowUpdating event of the GridView never fires.  All other events fire as normal.  I should note that I am 1) not using an ObjectDataSource but rather manually databinding as necessary to the datasource in the various GridView events and 2) using images rather than links in the GridView's CommandField.

When a row is put into edit mode by clicking the edit icon, the edit icon properly changes to the update icon and the various fields switch to their proper editable controls according to the EditTemplate controls for each column. However, after the row is edited and the update icon is clicked, an asynch postback occurs without the RowUpdating event (during which I would save the change and rebind) ever firing.  Some code stepping shows that the RowCommand event is being fired (as it should before the other more specific events fire) at which time the passed in value e.CommandName is still "Edit" rather than "Update" - hence the reason that RowUpdating is never fired.

Googling, I found several posts on the ASP.NET AJAX forums and other developer forums of similar cases of the RowUpdating event not firing (and only that event being a problem) when one combined a GridView in a dynamically wrapped UpdatePanel with image command buttons rather than links. Sounds like a MS bug?

Has anyone encountered this behavior and found a work-around?

Hi,

I also have encoutered this problem. I think this is because the edititem index is not being stored once you click on the update button. what i did was just to store the edititem index and load it in every time the grid is being reloaded.

hope that helps
