I'm attempting to install DNN (latest version) for a client on a remote server. It's been a year or more since I've worked with DNN, but the install seems to be the same. I extracted the files, created website application, made sure Network Services has all rights to that folder, setup a DB under SQL 2005 with a user that has dbo access to the database. All looks good, and I when I fire it up in the broswer, I see the start of the wizard that asks me if I want to do a custom, wizard or typical install (or whatever the choices are).

That's where the problem comes in. No matter which choice I select, after clicking NEXT, nothting happens. The browser shows a spinning logo indicating that something is happening, but nothing else happens. Nothing times out, no error messages, no progress, it just sits and thinks. Nothing shows up in the database, but I do see the install date show up in the web.config.

My client is pissed, and I need to get this installed. I need help. Is there some sort of install log or something that I can check for help?

The only non-standard part of this config that I can think of is that instead of creating a virtual directory off of an existing website, I creating a new website to host DNN. (This server hosts several independent websites). Otherwise, it's by the book installation. I can't think of anything that would affect, but mention it for completeness.

Please help! I'm supposed to be on vacation, and now I've got an angry client breathing down my neck... :(

Todd,

  • are JavaScript and cookies enabled in the browser you are using to install the web site?
  • make sure, you grant Network Service permissions to all subfolders and files as well.

The server is Windows 2003, and I am using IE to install it. I will certainly double check that javascript is running - I can also try to download FF and use that to install.

I did double check that all files/folders have Network Services (full access) applied to them. I will check again however.

What concerns me is that the DNN config process is VERY picky about these things usually. Not having the right security permissions or database permissions usually results in the config program not running at all. Instead, you get standard ASP.NET crash message with some message about what you messed up. I'm not getting that at all.

Is there an install log anywhere that DNN creates, or does that not really happen until you get fuirther in the process?

todd, if all else fails, you can still call the good old automated install procedure, by browsing to this url: http://yourdomain.com/install/install.aspx?mode=install
