I am m running DNN v4.5.5 and I have one 3rd party module installed (Active Forums v3.7.4)

My site is hosted in a shared hosting environment and since I upgraded to v4.5.5 I have had no issues on the site in terms of its resource consumption. However in the last week my hosting company informed me for the first time that my DNN installation does not always close all the connections with the SQL database and - consequently - my SQL database started to hog 100% of the database server's CPU.

When the hosting company brought the issue to my attention I established that:

  • there was no increase (or surge) in my human traffic on the site in the period before the issue emereged (confirmed via my Google Analytics account)
  • I checked then the serach engine robot traffic and there seemed to be some modest increase in such traffic so I, in order to eliminate excessive load on the database by search engine robots, I excluded the folder on my site containing the DNN app by updating my robots.txt file

Despite these findings and steps that I took, the issue has persisted - the database connections continued to stay open and my SQL server DB hogged 100% of the CPU on the DB serever. The hosting company then took the step to cut the connection between my DNN app and the database pending me resolving the problem (i.e. my DNN app is temporarily dead).

What usually causes this sort of issue? Can anyone provide some suggestions on how I can trouble-shoot it? Could it be scheduling tasks? Or logging of errors by the app in the DB? I am very short on ideas as to where I can begin.

Thanks,

eoghano

Disable scheduling tasks is a good idea. I have a site which consume  nearly 90% cou resources when open scheduling tasks.

As the user mentioned above, there are a few things you might be able to check/try.

1.) Potentially reduce the frequency of the search index scheduled task as if it overruns (Tries to start again before it is finished) it can create orphan connections

2.) Investigate your event log, see if you have any modules that are throwing regular exceptions, that might cause orphaned connections

3.) See if your hosting company would be willing to run some traces for you to see which queries are being executed before the connection is orphaned
